The 7 Wonders of the Modern World … a Classroom Story
I like to network with school teachers because they often have great stories to tell about incidents in the classroom and what they learn from students. The following story came from one of those school teachers.
In this story, a class of students was asked to list what they thought were the current ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. While there were certainly some differences in the lists created, the following received the most votes:
Egypt’s Great Pyramids
The Taj Mahal
Grand Canyon
Panama Canal
Empire State Building
St. Peter’s Basilica
The Great Wall of China
While gathering the student lists, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the young girl if she was having trouble creating her list.
The girl replied: Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.
Work on your imagination: How to Be Good at Your Imagination
The teacher told her: Well tell us what you have and maybe we can help.
The girl hesitated and then read her list to the class:
To see
To hear
To touch
To taste
To feel
To laugh
And to love
The classroom got so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop.
The things we overlook as too simple and ordinary are the easiest to take for granted, aren’t they?
Yet they are truly the most wondrous of all!
